Six Misconceptions About Travel Insurance

Whether you’re travelling within Canada or exploring overseas, it’s a good time to consider travel insurance.

Here, we debunk myths about coverage you may need.

Myth 1. You’re covered under your Government Health Plan.

Your Government Health Plan may not cover all your emergency medical expenses—even if you’re travelling in Canada.

Myth 2. Your credit card coverage is sufficient.

Many credit cards only cover trip interruption and baggage loss, may have limits on how much travel insurance they provide and may not cover people over 65 years old. Review your credit card plan carefully and consider an additional policy to fill in any gaps.

Myth 3. Airlines will reimburse you for expenses.

Airlines rarely cover the cost of an unused hotel room due to flight delays. Vacation package insurance often includes trip cancellations and interruption to cover it, as well as delayed or lost luggage, giving you an allowance for clothes.

Myth 4. Short trips don’t require insurance.

Don’t convince yourself it’s okay to travel without insurance for just a short trip. Travel insurance will give you the protection you need.

Myth 5. Multi-trip plans are expensive.

A Multi-trip plan covers numerous vacations taken within 365 days of the date of purchase. To cover your bases if you plan to take a few trips anywhere from four to 60 days in one year, CAA Travel Insurance1 offers both a Multi-Trip Medical Plan and a Multi-Trip Vacation Package Plan.

Myth 6. I can just pay out-of-pocket if something happens on vacation.

In some places, medical costs and hospitals can be extremely expensive, and require upfront cash payment. Trip cancellation insurance typically costs 4 to 10% of the total, prepaid nonrefundable trip cost—a small amount compared to losing the entire amount.
